Employment Opportunity

CHOIR and/or HANDBELL DIRECTOR(S)

PURPOSE: The Choir and/or Handbell Director(s) prepares musicians and inspires worshipers at First Wausau UMC to help us Live and Share God’s Love.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must have a BA or MA degree in music and experience conducting. The choir director must have experience teaching choral techniques. It is preferred that the handbell director have experience teaching bell and chime techniques, but an experienced music director may be eligible for the position if they are willing to learn. The position(s) can be separate or combined. An accompanist is provided for the choir, but piano proficiency is helpful. An ultimate commitment to loving and serving God and people, as well as a background check, is required of all church employees.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Church music directors demonstrate that the purpose of music in the church is to glorify God and inspire faith in the musicians and all gathered in worship. They are responsible for selecting appropriate music for the seasons and themes of worship, developing the gifts of the choir and/or handbells, and organizing occasional instrumentalists. The director(s) will be expected to lead a short devotional/prayer at the beginning and/or end of each rehearsal and help people in each ensemble care for one another and reach out to encourage others. The music director(s) must communicate and coordinate with grace and expediency with their ensemble(s), as well as with the church community and staff. Participation in 2-3 worship planning meetings per year is expected. The musical highlight is a “Lessons and Carols” service in mid-December.

Choral Director: Lead rehearsals with the choir on Wednesdays during the school year from 7:00-8:15pm (approximately 36 weeks). Lead warm-ups with the choir at 9:30am on Sunday mornings to sing at the 10am service about three-four times a month, September through May. This averages about 5 hours/week during the school year, including about 2 prep hours/week.
Handbell Director: Lead rehearsals, currently on Wednesdays during the school year from 5:45-6:45pm. Lead warm-ups with the handbell choir at 9:00am on Sunday mornings to play at the 10am service 4-6 times during the school, September through May. This averages about 3 hours/week during the school year, including about 1.5 prep hours/week.

The Music Director(s) reports to Senior Pastor and Staff-Parish Relations Committee.
COMPENSATION:  $20/hour, with an annual review and commensurate raises.
